Reiki is a gentle and profoundly relaxing Japanese energy modality created by Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 19th century. It is used to direct Chi or Qi (universal life energy) to and through an intended recipient for the purpose of creating energetic balance. Specific hand placements over the body send energy to assist the clearing of blockages or stagnation in the natural energy flow, which in turn promotes the body's own healing response and internal balance. Imbalances of energy are generally created by trauma, injury, illness, and/or emotional disturbances.
Studies have shown one of the primary effects of reiki is the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system that controls the rest and relaxation responses in the body. It's therapeutic qualities make it an excellent modality for anyone experiencing pain, stress, anxiety, depression, or chronic health conditions. Reiki isn't affiliated with any religion so all belief systems can benefit from the modality. Unlike massage, reiki is performed over the clothes so there is no need to undress for treatment. For those who have an aversion to physical touch, hand placements can be used above the body instead. Many people feel an increase in peace, security and well-being during and after treatment. While reiki doesn't replace regular medical care, it is a wonderful complement to conventional practices to promote recovery, and support emotional and physical health. On a personal note, I currently volunteer at the cancer center at St. Charles providing reiki to patients in treatment. All the people I've worked on have reported significant improvements in their levels of pain, anxiety and well-being after receiving reiki. It's been such a delight to become attuned to this modality and witness the incredible effects it creates. I'm so excited to start sharing it in the studio with the Central Oregon population.
